Recovery does not begin when you wake after surgery. It begins with feeling informed, prepared and supported beforehand. Our pre-operative approach follows the ECHO Framework™: Educate, Calm, Heal and Observe — recovery that reverberates beyond the treatment room.

Educate: prepare with knowledge

Your appointment starts with a detailed consultation covering your procedure, surgical areas, previous operations, health, medication, compression guidance, travel and your surgeon’s instructions. We explain how surgery can affect lymphatic pathways, what post-operative drainage is designed to do and why it is different from a standard massage. Knowing what to expect can reduce the temptation to follow conflicting online advice once you are home.

Calm: regulate body and mind

Stress and uncertainty can make recovery feel harder. We introduce gentle diaphragmatic breathing and simple nervous-system support, giving you practical tools to use before and after surgery. A suitable pre-operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage session uses light, rhythmic skin movements — never deep pressure — and gives you a calm introduction to the technique while you are comfortable and mobile.

Heal: prepare your recovery environment

The ECHO and PEACE Recovery Pathway™ materials help you think beyond the operation itself. We cover realistic expectations, sleep, hydration, protein, gentle circulation, preparing your home, arranging support and planning your appointments. We also discuss what not to do: do not lift heavily too soon, push through pain, rush back to high-impact activity or compare your timeline with somebody else’s recovery. With your consent, photographs or measurements may establish a baseline for tissue, movement and swelling so that progress can be followed afterwards.

Observe: know what happens next

Before surgery, you should understand what changes are expected, what can be supported in clinic and what must return to your surgical team. Bring any written aftercare or compression instructions so your support remains consistent. Pre-operative MLD and ECHO education do not diagnose, replace medical advice or override your surgeon’s individual protocol. If treatment is not appropriate, we will say so.

What to expect from your session

Before

You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what treatment should involve. I’ll explain the session, listen to your concerns and make sure you feel comfortable with the plan.

During

Each appointment is tailored to the service you’ve booked and your individual needs. You can ask questions or ask me to pause at any point. I’ll take into account your history, your goals and how you respond during treatment.

After

After each session, I will be upfront and clear about the recommended next steps, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident with the plan.

About Body Remedies

I’m Mel, the owner and therapist at Body Remedies. Before moving into this work, I spent almost 20 years in the NHS ambulance service as a paramedic.

That experience shaped the way I work: listen carefully, explain clearly and treat the person in front of me as an individual.
